Chapter Twelve

Kendrick glanced over the files, using the key he had written for the code to decode every vile word. The scheme became darker with each document he gathered. It was organized carefully and kept under wraps. So, he knew it would be difficult to expose them. But it was happening. So, he had to find a way to do something about it.

Kendrick had become more daring as he gathered the files, carefully documenting who they came from and decoding every word they said on a separate sheet of paper. He kept the evidence in a safe spot where Emma wouldn’t stumble across it — and his colleagues wouldn’t think to look. And Kendrick waited with trepidation while trying to figure out what to do. He was terrified and plagued with guilt because he had not been able to stop it yet.

Emma had begun to catch onto the fact that something was wrong. Kendrick knew she was becoming suspicious, so he did his best to act normal. But she continued to give him the same worried look. And by now, it required more than a kiss to make it go away.

A few days after telling Semjah about what he had found, Kendrick was even more stressed than ever. He hadn’t seen Semjah since then; it seemed like Semjah was avoiding him. And it made Kendrick worry that Semjah was planning to go to the gang leaders about what Kendrick told him. Maybe Semjah couldn’t face him due to the guilt of knowing that turning on him would lead to Kendrick’s painful death.

Worried about Semjah’s loyalty, Kendrick became even more careful than before, taking extra safety precautions like constantly surveilling his surroundings and remaining on his guard for anyone who might be stalking him. But Kendrick knew if the gang targeted him, he’d be dead. It felt like he was just waiting for it to happen.

But even that didn’t deter Kendrick from stealing documents and gathering information while waiting to take the risk of exposing them. He figured that if the gang was going to kill him anyway, he might as well go to the police with the evidence and see what they could do about it.

Kendrick worried, though, that doing so would put Emma at risk. So, he was stuck in a horrible situation where he felt too paralyzed with fear and regret to do anything. He spent less time with Emma as he began isolating himself in his office, obsessing over his mission.

But Emma was always waiting for him at night with dinner, no matter how late he got home. “You look so stressed,” Emma said one day as she hugged him. She looked into Kendrick’s eyes as if she were trying to peer into the depths of his soul. “What’s going on? I feel like something has changed. Something’s been on your mind, and you know you can talk to me about it.”

“I know,” he replied, kissing her downturned lips. “I do talk to you about things. And I appreciate the support you always give me.
